The weld. At least I thunk it would weld. The picture makes the steel look darker than it really was. Although it looks like that top layer of steel is cooling very fast.
Post squish. A couple at welding heat, then use an angle grinder to remove the welds up the sides. Heat back up and continue.
Drawing out with the press. Moving steel around is what it's good at.
Some straightening, a little hand work, etc.. I can't let the machines do all the work, I'll get lazy.

At this point, I would draw the bar out long enough to fold it over into thirds and start again. I ended up with this billet around 160 layers and did some manipulation on parts of it like angel hair twist. More to come.
